Background
Marathon Petroleum Corporation required upgraded cabling at their facility in Detroit, Michigan. KLA was tasked with establishing expectations for future test results, in addition to the upgrade.
The Solution
KLA completed a robust Sumitomo FutureFLEX Air Blown Fiber (ABF) installation, which ended up spanning into several years and multiple projects. KLA upgraded Marathon’s existing infrastructure and pulled new ABF tube cable across six complexes and nine buildings at the Detroit facility. KLA adhered to Marathon’s strict safety guidelines while installing the cable underground and in conduit through the complexes. In addition to testing and recertifying the existing ABF tube cable, KLA installed dozens of fiber junction boxes, pulled over 30,000 feet of new tube cable, and blew in over 150,000 feet of air blown fiber.
By using Sumitomo LYNX Splice-On connectors, KLA was able to extend Marathon a 25-year Sumitomo warranty for the tubes, fiber, and connectors. Through a rigorous documentation process, KLA helped Marathon establish their expectations for future test results. KLA ended up being solidified as the trusted contractor for the termination and testing of all types of fiber installed across the Marathon facility.
