Cisco recognizes Loretta Walker, a graduate of their Networking Academy and KLA Customer Engineer

Loretta Walker lives for her three daughters. As a single mom, she works hard to provide for her family. "They keep me motivated and keep me going," Walker says.

After going back to school and taking Cisco Networking Academy classes, Walker recently changed careers and is now employed as a customer engineer at KLA Laboratories in Dearborn, Michigan. "I used to be a correctional officer," Walker says. "I wanted a career where I knew I could live wherever I wanted to and have more financial freedom."

KLA Laboratories, a family-run business founded in 1929, does a range of IT and communication services, including installing audio and visual systems, building Wi-Fi networks and providing event production services. It has managed the Detroit Tigers’ public address systems since 1935 and sold the microphones Motown used to record the Four Tops, Temptations and Supremes. It landed as customers the Detroit Lions in 1951, Oakland Hills Country Club in 1954 and the Detroit Pistons in 1987. Now, KLA designs and builds wireless local area networks and distributed antenna systems for sports stadiums, conference centers and hospitals, and has installed systems at the University of Michigan’s Big House in Ann Arbor, Spartan Stadium at Michigan State University and Ohio Stadium at Ohio State University. When you have thousands of fans using cellphones and two football teams using wireless devices, having reliable Wi-Fi is a must for any National Football  League stadium.

At Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, the service needed an upgrade. The Detroit Lions organization and Wi-Fi carrier Verizon went to work on the system just as the 2016 season was starting.

“We broke ground Sept. 19 with a compressed schedule to get the boring done in between a couple of foot- ball games,” says Shawn Johnson, project manager for KLA Laboratories, the primary contractor.

 Matt O’Bryan, president and CEO of KLA Labs, a Dearborn-based information technology company, was diagnosed with leukemia 16 years ago. When KLA celebrated its 85th anniversary in 2013 with a golf outing, O’Bryan decided to use the event to raise funds for the Michigan chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which he serves on the board of. DBusiness Daily News spoke with O’Bryan on what to expect during for the third annual KLA Golf Outing, which takes place Sept. 12 at TPC Michigan in Dearborn, his decision to give back to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and his personal experience with the disease.
